Burney-Harris-Lyons Middle Passes School Uniform Policy

gold polo shirt

School might be out for the summer but that doesn’t mean school officials in Clarke County (Athens, Georgia) have stopped planning for the upcoming school year. Administrators have already gathered to discuss new policies for the coming year.   Along with prepping new initiatives, goals and discussing changes to the new school year, came a vote to pass a new school uniform dress code policy for students enrolled in. The Clarke County Board of Education approved the Uniform Dress Policy at Burney-Harris-Lyons Middle school making it effective this upcoming 2010-2011 school year.

The new school dress code policy will require middle school students to wear shirts in colors white, blue or gold and must have a collar.  Shirts or blouses cannot have strips. Shirts worn underneath must also be white, blue, or gold. Button-down shirts must be buttoned to not expose any part of the chest.

Short sleeve or long sleeve polo shirts or button down tops may be worn by students. It will be required by all young men to wear their shirts tucked in.

For the bottom half, pants will need to be in colors navy, khaki, or black and have to be ankle-length.  Capri’s and cargo pants will be allowed to be worn, as will knee-length shorts and skirts.  Clothing fabric can be made of twill or corduroy but no denim (jeans) of any color will be allowed.  No sagging pants allowed next year and that will be monitored closely. Pants must be worn at the waist line with a belt if there is a belt loop on the pant.

Flip flops will be banned in the amended policy as will certain headgear including bandanas, skull caps, hoods, hats, or sweat bands.

This means jackets, coats, or sweatshirts with hoods will need to be put up and stored in lockers during regular school hours.  If jackets or sweaters are worn, students must wear a collared white, blue or gold shirt underneath.  Again no denim shirt or jacket will be allowed.

Only during special events (such as field trips, field day, or school spirit day) which will be designated by the school principal, will students be allowed to wear club T-shirts, athletic gear or team uniforms.  These “dress down” days will need to uphold the district dress code policy and student handbook.

Parents may purchase their child’s new school uniforms at local retail or online stores like School of Uniforms! Right now School of Uniforms is offering 15% off your entire summer purchase using coupon code summer15!

Ahwatukee Welcomes New School and School Uniform Policy

Ahwatukee will add a fifth charter high school to the Arizona county this coming fall in August. The schools dress code will be slightly different than those other four in the county including Skyline Technical, Desert Vista, Horizon Honors, and Mountain Pointe high schools.

The school officials for Ahwatukee would like to start the new school and year off with a stricter dress code policy to help their students focus more on academics and hopefully a future college career.

Ahwatukee Foothills Prep’s  first enrolled class will require the boys to wear belts and neckties as part of their school uniform.  Both girls and boys will be required to wear light colored collared shirts with dark slacks or skirts.  Dark colored shoes will also be worn by students to complete their school uniform outfit.

Parents enrolling their students in the new school are excited about the dress code policy and think it will make for better academics and a better future for their children. Most parents also feel it helps students prepare better for their future in the “real” workforce.  Without working about how students are dressed resulting in less daily distractions, teachers and administrators are able to focus on classroom lessons.  The Foothill Prep school already has about 300 students required to wear school uniforms in grades kindergarten through eighth grade.

The charter school expects at least 50 students to enroll this coming first year, but will only allow a maximum of 100 students in the fall.  With each following year, the school will add the other three grade ;eve;s as the first one advances on.

Students who attend the charter school are surely destined for success.  The high school will cater to students wishing to earn college credits in their junior and senior year of high school which can be applied to a few of their first year college course requirements.  The students will be required to learn a foreign language and all four years will include science and social studies.  This is more than the minimums required by general public schools in the state of Arizona.  The county’s charter schools all have waiting lists since smaller than the traditional public school and only accepting a limited number of new students each year.

School uniforms are especially popular among charter or private schools of all grade levels creating a more polished and professional learning enviornment for the students attending.  Student grades and school performance are typically ranked higher than others.

School Dress Code Changes Coming to Scranton

dresscode1

For Scranton, PA and West Scranton high school students, a stricter dress code might be coming their way in the upcoming new school year. School official are considering a stricter dress code for high school students attending school at Scranton and West Scranton High Schools based on poor dress code behavior.

Administrators are still studying the pros and cons as well as accepting feedback from current educators, parents, and students.  The amended dress code policy would ban yoga, stretch pants or skinny jeans, and shorts that are more than 3 inches above the knee.  Student violators have taken freedom of dress and personality to new levels recently and administrators are trying to find ways to eliminate distractions in the classrooms and among students.

On Tuesday, June 1st, school directors began reviewing the changes.  Currently banned is clothing that reflects anything gang-related or clothing that is one size larger or smaller than what the student measures. Form-fitting pants are also currently banned.  The need to still specify that yoga, tight-fitting “workout”, stretch pants, or skinny jeans seems needed in an amended school policy.

The ban of exposed body piercings fall under the current school dress code policy, but a single nose stud would remain acceptable under the amended policy.

Under the new policy, acceptable embroidery would now allow college or military logos and brands to be displayed on shirts.

Currently, high school students are prohibited from wearing a list of items including jeans, sweatpants, and t-shirts. Students are allowed to wear collared shirts, sweaters and khakis or dress pants. Students enrolled in school grades kindergarten through eighth grade are required to wear polo shirts or blouses which is to include the district name embroidered on the shirt or blouse.  Blue and khaki slacks, skirts, or shorts are also bottom options for these students.

Administrators and teachers say that the current policy allows flexibility and allows for creative attire to be worn by students.  It is often hard to interpret what is and what is not allowed by students and teachers complain the dress code policies are even harder to enforce among high school students.  Because of the recent complaints and issues rising from the current dress by the high school students, a committee of teachers, students, parents, and school officials was formed to discuss and recommend the changes.

Directors are stressing to teachers that should further regulations be added to the policy, it must be strictly enforced in order for it to be successful. The superintendent along with school administrators feel the changes to the policy will help eliminate the current dress code violations seen in the school district.

Granite City School Dress Code Stricter

Granite City Illinois schools will see a slightly tighter school dress code policy this coming August.  A new dress code requiring school uniforms in their public school system will make it  mandatory for students to wear shirts with collars.

Only a year old, administrators began to see students getting creative and finding ways to get around the dress code policy already in place. Students “casual” dressing behavior violated the current school uniform dress code policy.

Since the nw school dress code went into effect last August, students have been allowed to wear shirts that are red, black, navy blue, or red and white, along with khaki pants, shorts, skirts, or jumpers. Students begin wearing t-shirts and other inappropriate undergarments underneath such t-shirts, sweaters, and sweatshirts. superintendents.  Sweaters and sweatshirts will still be allowed in the new school year, however students will now be required to wear a collared shirt underneath the sweater or  sweatshirt.

As usual, some students and parents are resisting the policy. But with the casual violators out there, administrators feel this will eliminate issues experienced last school year and hope this continues to create uniformity among students.

This requirement is in addition to other some others including a ban on certain colors and denim.  The same colors will still be allowed this coming fall. At this time no discussion or plans have been made to change the color policy.

Letters have already been mailed out to parents and students informing them of the recent change to the school uniform policy.  More information will be mailed out to parents in a second letter with student registration information this summer.

School Uniforms Voted Yes in Alachua County

sbaclogo

School uniforms will be officially making their debut in Alachua County public schools beginning with the 2010-2011 school year.

School Board officials voted 3-2 yesterday evening, June 1, passing the long-debated dress code policy that will require all students enrolled in public school grades kindergarten through 12 to wear school uniforms.  Originally the proposal called for khaki pants with a navy or white collared shirt, but after further discussion, board member officials decided to leave it up to the individual school administrators to decide on the specific colors required by their students.  This will still allow school officials the freedom to select their school colors (to show school spirit!) if they choose to do so.

As with most dress code changes, there is an opposing group of students and parents in Alachua County who have strong opinions and school board members are addressing the emails received from those sharing their opposing opinions.  The argument is often that students feel school uniforms impose on their liberties of selecting their own clothes and that school uniforms diminish their ability to express their individual personalities.

Those who agree and welcome the change believe it reduces the stress on parents and students when it comes to school clothes shopping. Students often feel there is a need to keep with the latest fashion trends and name brand popularity. Administrators and parents feel uniforms help create uniformity and help level the playing field among students. School uniforms typically do come in being less expensive than the traditional school uniform shopping sprees and make the shopping decisions much easier.  Most uniforms for the entire school year can come in less than $100 per student.

School Uniforms Very Popular in Japan

nanchatte-seifuku-school-uniform

School uniforms and strict dress codes continue to be a debated topic among school administrators, parents, and students soaring with mixed opinions and sometimes heavy opposition.  Some think enforced dress codes do not allow students to express their freedom of personality, while others believe it minimizes bad behavior in the classroom and eliminates any inappropriate clothing which often causes distractions in class.

With every new school uniform proposal, school boards fight back petitions from students and parents and spend time addressing concerns in PTA meetings.

In Japan, it is quite the opposite. Since the growing trend started back in 2002, girls in Japanese high schools actually prefer to wear what has been branded as the “fake uniform” or in Japanese, “Nanchatte seifuku”.  The “fake uniform” consists of components that a traditional school uniform, including a fitted polo or button down collared blouse, pleated skirt, blazer or sweater, socks, and tie. Although not required to wear school uniforms, students routinely purchase and customize their uniforms every year to include school logos and colors. Local uniforms shops provide hundreds of options in color, style and fit which allows students to mix and match styles, still allowing them to express their own “outside of school” personalities.

This certainly is a very popular “fashion” trend and it’s been noticed that these girls love wearing their school uniforms, some even wearing them out in their spare time. Other eastern countries have also seen this trend growing and spreading throughout their local high schools as well.

So I wonder what the odds are that school uniforms will one day been seen as a fashionable trend here in the United States?
